Would you ever want to have the ability to hear men’s thoughts the way your character Ali Davis does in your new movie, “What Men Want”? Nope. I have too many voices of my own rattling around in my brain. I don’t need anybody else’s.
It’s been almost 20 years since the original film, “What Women Want.” What are the changes between the two films? You’re not exactly playing a female version of Mel Gibson. I love how we took care of the men. That was my main concern, to make sure we’re not male-bashing, because I have a son. We also dealt with subject matter that we’re dealing with in real life, like equal pay. There’s a scene where I start arguing with Brian Bosworth, who plays my boss, and I think he’s not firing me because I’m a woman. And then he goes, “No. I can’t, I would never. ...” And I say, “Oh, so is it because I’m a black woman?” I liked that we dealt with those issues head on.
You’re known for so many dramatic characters, like Cookie on “Empire.” Do you prefer comedic or dramatic roles? I like comedy better. It’s better to laugh than to try to cry. Look at the world right now. I’m designed to be a comedic actress. And, for some odd reason, I just keep getting cast in these dramatic roles. But to me, comedic actors or comedians make the best dramatic actors because they add another layer of humor.
You also played a character in the animated film “Ralph Breaks the Internet.” How is doing voice-over work different from shooting on a set? It exercises my creative muscles. There’s nothing visually stimulating to act opposite of, so it’s all in my brain. I was an only child growing up, and I had nobody to play with, which made me very creative. I loved playing school: I’d line all of my doll-babies and teddy bears up as my students. And periodically, I would come over to my mother sitting on the sofa and say something like, “This is little Johnny, he was bad.” Next thing you know, my mother is surrounded by all of my doll-babies and teddy bears, because I guess they were all bad. She had no idea she was the principal in this story I was making up.
Is there a dream role you’d like to conjure into this world? I would like to do a fantasy movie and put on some heavy prosthetics and some fairy wings. I would also love to play a villain.
How do you decide what roles to take? If the role does not scare me, I won’t take it, because it’s not going to change me. I won’t be transformed, therefore the audience won’t benefit from the transformation. There’s nothing for me to do.
Have you said no to roles for that reason? I said no to Cookie at first. I thought she was horrible. But as an actor, you can’t judge. Your job is to empathize with that character and to tell that character’s truth. Once I started really looking at her as a mother, that changed. When I lived in the ’hood, I understood that jobs went away, and drugs were dropped off, and that a 9-to-5 job and minimum wage is not going to take care of your family. I’m not condoning selling drugs in any way: I think it’s the worst thing you can do to your people. But it’s survival. And if you want to save your kids from a life of drugs and jail and becoming statistics, then you do what you got to do. And that’s what she did.
Does it feel inspiring to see actors in their 40s and 50s — especially other African-American women like Regina King and Viola Davis — getting these really rich roles? This change is a culmination of all of our efforts and hard work, but also because people in Hollywood are going to notice anything that makes money. So as long as these projects keep making money, Hollywood’s going to keep greenlighting these films. But I never saw myself being done at the age of 40. Liam Neeson is still out here kicking butt, and so is Denzel Washington, and so is Tom Cruise. Why can’t the ladies have a go at it?B:
